R.I.P. “The Carolina Hot Rod” 1990-2010

Please take a moment of silence to honor the Carolina Hot Rod, may she rest in peace… or as an interesting recycled steel object. If you haven’t already, it may help you fill in the details by reading my earlier post The Carolina Hot Rod.

Today, the Hot Rod is being taken to the car crusher to be sent into scrap metal eternity. She lived a long an fruitful life. I can’t verify it, but I am guessing that fewer repairs were completed on that vehicle and almost any other vehicle on the road. Toward the end, it showed and she sputtered and weaved all over the road like a blind horse.

The Hot Rod rarely if ever left its passengers stranded on the side of the road. It operated like an Ak-47 and kept on going no matter how dirty or ill-maintained she was. I’m not really sure how many miles on on the car now. The odometer has been stuck somewhere just past 146,000 since 2002.

I always planned on driving this car into the ground until it died. I had hoped for something a little more dramatic than failing to get it started in a friend’s parking lot. I guess we can just say that the Hot Rod died peacefully in its sleep. Now, I putt around in an older, louder, and much smellier car. I hope that my new ride, “Gerwalt”(German female name for “mighty with a spear”) will last as long and create such a legacy at the Carolina Hot Rod has. I have definitely been doing a better job at keeping the trash out of the floor boards these days.

This weekend I bought a car that will replace the legendary Carolina Hot Rod. The Hot Rod has been struggling as of late. I have been trying to find a Mercedes-Benz 300TD for a while. I found one in good shape so I went ahead and got it since they are hard to find.

Here are the specs:
-1984 300TD
-290k miles
-5 cyl diesel (MB123 engine)
-Steel blue exterior/navy interior

My plan is to start running waste vegetable oil in it in some capacity. This engine is one of the best for that purpose. I also wanted a vehicle that could transport 4 kids. That narrows it down to a pretty small collection of options and I already own the other obvious choice (diesel suburban). And who wouldn’t want to roll in a fine piece of German engineering?

So, I went from a clunky 1990 Geo, to a noisy and smoky 1984 wagon. Brilliant!
